how does bless neurofeedback work

How Does BLESS Work?

Small sensors on the scalp monitor brainwaves. These signals are processed, mirrored, and sent back to the brain. Essentially, the brain receives information about itself and adjusts its own activity in real time—so the brain is effectively treating itself.

The signals traveling to and from the brain share the same frequency, which is why the system is called BLESS: Brainwave Linked Electrical Stimulation System. As the brain receives feedback about itself, the brain adjusts its own activity in response. Essentially, the brain is treating itself.

Healing the System, Not the Symptoms

What Does BLESS Treat

BLESS shifts the nervous system from sympathetic “fight or flight” into parasympathetic “rest and recover.” Rather than targeting only a single symptom, BLESS influences broad networks—rhythms, neurotransmitters, hormones—and promotes self‑regulation, efficiency, and flexibility across the nervous system. We still discuss outcomes in terms of familiar disorders for clarity.

Anxiety

Clients typically become noticeably calmer, far less reactive, and much more resilient in their lives as their mental and emotional regulation significantly improves.

PTSD

BLESS reduces “fight or flight” and enhances “rest and recovery”. Reactivity and fear diminish, self-regulation is restored. BLESS is particularly effective for complex PTSD.

Depression

Depression BLESS is often effective even when other treatments fail. Many BLESS clients report feeling restored energy, increased motivation, and greater overall well-being.

TBI

BLESS may decrease many common distressing symptoms including insomnia, impatience, brain fog and even hypersensitivity. BLESS is also an excellent adjunct modality.

Substance Abuse

Many individuals self-medicate for anxiety, depression, or poor impulse control. By addressing these at the root, BLESS can ease withdrawal discomfort and support sustained abstinence.

ADD/ADHD

BLESS tends to reduce impulsivity, hyperactivity, and distractibility. Clients often become more organized and feel much more in control of their lives.

Autism

BLESS clients experience reduced anxiety, improved emotional regulation, and greater impulse control, which contribute to improved social and personal interactions.

Headaches

Headaches Migraine and chronic headache sufferers often experience significantly milder and less frequent episodes. Their headaches may even disappear altogether.

Getting Started with BLESS

Get clear, straightforward answers to the most common questions about training, practice management, and supporting your clients with BLESS Direct Neurofeedback.

Anyone who completes our training and passes the certification exam may treat clients with BLESS. Those without a clinical license must operate under the supervision of an actively licensed provider. Only licensed clinicians may purchase a BLESS unit.

Yes. After receiving BLESS Direct Neurofeedback Certification, those without a clinical license may administer BLESS, but must do so under the supervision of a licensed clinician.

Absolutely. No prior medical background is required—general intelligence and strong interpersonal skills are sufficient.

  • Online training modules.
  • Three‑day live training (online, in Los Angeles, or at your location).
  • Passing the certification exam.
  • Senior practitioner support by email, text, or phone (responses within 24–48 hours).

  • Additional support for new practitioners.

BLESS is rapid and effective for anxiety, stress, depression, and insomnia—changes are often noticed within the first three sessions. BLESS complements other modalities you already use. Some providers integrate BLESS into a single 50‑minute appointment (two therapies in one hour); others schedule BLESS as a separate 20–30 minute session or on alternating visits.

Insurance carriers generally categorize direct and traditional neurofeedback as biofeedback (CPT 90901). Coverage varies by state and carrier. Efforts are underway to expand coverage.

A typical visit lasts 20–30 minutes. After a brief check‑in since the last session, the clinician cleans the skin—primarily on the forehead. A few small sensors are applied to receive brainwaves and send them back to the brain. The stimulation portion usually lasts from seconds to about six minutes. The current is too small to feel. Most clients finish a session feeling noticeably better than when they arrived.

The most common temporary effects are mild fatigue, spaciness or “wooziness,” a light headache, or, less commonly, feeling “wired” (giddy or occasionally anxious) and rarely nausea. These usually resolve within minutes; in rare cases, they can last up to a day or two. If side effects occur, the subsequent session uses a lower dose, which typically diminishes or eliminates them. Occasionally, symptoms such as anxiety or depression may briefly flare before settling.

Yes. We have not found that being on prescription or illicit drugs prevents progress or causes adverse reactions with BLESS. All medication adjustments must be made by the prescribing clinician.

No. There are no ongoing fees beyond standard maintenance or out‑of‑warranty repairs. Devices typically last seven years or longer.

Upon passing the certifying exam, you will receive a Certificate of Completion of Foundation Training for BLESS Direct Neurofeedback. This indicates you have been trained in the fundamentals of Direct Neurofeedback and are competent to safely and effectively use the BLESS system. This certification is not recognized by licensing bodies for traditional neurofeedback; it is intended to assure clients you have received proper training. A Client Consent Form should be signed by the client or guardian.
